The morning breeze cleared away the mist. Little Bearclaw huddled close to the campfire. Even though it was summer the mountain night air could chill a body to the bone. He accepted a cup of birch leaf tea made by Alberta.
Carl sat across from the young native man, eyeing him with a mix of wonder and suspicion. Finally he asked. “Do you know a man named Rook?”
Carl had never seen a look of fear cross a man’s face like he saw on Little Bearclaw. In a quavering voice he said, “He is a coyote with the heart of a demon.” Then for a long time he would say no more. He just sat there staring into the fire, his eyes gleaming with fierce and angry memories.
